No health insurance means high health care cost
Over 20% of Americans have no health insurance. The worst news is that this percentage is on the rise, over the past one year and is set to cap at an all time high by the year end. The reasons are many: Bad economy, high health insurance cost, lack of affordability, perceived non necessity of health insurance, etc., If you are one of those who make up this percentage, there are a few facts that you need to think about. America, as a nation is one of the wealthiest in the world, even considering the bleak economic scenario that we are undergoing.
It also is one of the costliest countries when it comes to health care and expenses. A regular full body checkup, which costs just a few hundred dollars in countries like India, China, etc., runs into a few thousands of dollars in the US. While the average earning per person in America is higher than these countries, it must also be noted that basic health care and its auxiliary services are also very costly and during the times of emergency medical needs, the financial hit on an American is at least 3 times more than the average person in those countries. The only way to cope with this situation is to have a buffer in the form of health insurance.
On an average, 20% of the insurance policies are filed for a claim, in any given year and the average cost of each claim is big enough to cover the health insurance premiums for a couple of years. This simply means that an individual is prone to a medical emergency once in every five years and that emergency is going to set him back by several thousand dollars! By having no health insurance, one is leaving himself open for a serious financial set back, which is compounded if we take an average family into consideration (3 people). Health insurance is costly, yes. But, not having any insurance is even more costly.
The exponential advancements in medicines and treatment methods are only going to increase the already heady cost of health care. By having no health insurance or inadequate insurance is bound to leave any individual in a serious monetary tangle. There are many options for people from all walks of life to get a good and well optimized health cover. The solutions are out there and the onus is on the individual to search and buy the correct health cover for self and the family.
Health insurance should not be viewed as a commitment or a monthly liability, if you do that you might end up as one of the 20% of the uninsured Americans! It is a cover which provides financial security for self and family during the time of need and more than pays for itself by this measure alone. The peace of mid it offers to the insured is another factor that cannot be limited to cost based values. Having no health insurance is akin to a gamble, you might win sometimes and lose the other times but remember, health, security and peace of mind are intangibles that cannot be gambled upon!
