Best ways of buying health insurance
The health insurance benefits provided by employers to the employees have fallen by more than 6% in the past ten years. This means a whopping 4-5 million employees have no health insurance. The options left to such people are available in the market but are more costly, so, we have a situation where people end up buying health insurance based on their premium paying capacity and this is not healthy. There are many drawbacks that arise because of this. The insured is left with an inadequate insurance cover and might not be able to cover costs during a medical emergency. Also, the coverage offered by the policy might not be the correct option for the individual. The insured cannot be blamed for this situation but the fact remains that there is a great divide between the actual needs of the insured and the coverage that they get. We will try to look at the options that can help an individual to overcome this predicament.
One of the best ways of buying health insurance which is cheap and also has adequate coverage is by leveraging the employer provided health benefits. This option is at least twice as costly as it was 10 years ago but it still is the most optimized and cheapest option available. Employers use the group health insurance benefits as an enticement to attract work force and rightly so! Group health insurance can be the best thing that can happen to an employee in the current scenario.
Spouses who have this benefit can also extend it to their family members. Self employed people and people who cannot be covered in the group insurance policies will have to contend themselves with the private health insurance options. They also will have to resign themselves to the fact that they need to pay more to get the same kind of benefits.
The real reason with the high costs of insurance lies in the fact that the medical expenses have risen exponentially in the past 20 years. A part reason can also be the advanced technology that is currently available in the medical field, is also costly. Illnesses which were deemed incurable some years ago, are curable today but their treatments are costly (Chemotherapy is an example). Whereas, the increase of wages for the people, has not seen the same kind of growth. This has resulted in a big gap between the buying ability of the people and available costs. Insurance companies step in to fill the need but try to cover their own risks and high costs by increasing the insurance costs. Buying health insurance with a premium that fits the average man’s pockets is not going to assure high quality medical care. As is the case with all predicaments that the country faces, it is the common man who is most affected by this health insurance mismatch. Till such time there is a change in this scenario, people will have to resort to buying health insurance at a price which is suitable for them and pray that they never have to use it!
