There is enough confusion amongst the public about the differentiation between health insurance and accident health insurance. A health insurance plan offers the coverage for the medicine and treatment costs that arise out of a medical predicament, whereas the accident health insurance covers the risks related to the loss of income of the insured, which arise as a result of an accident. The accident plans also cover unpaid (accident related) medical costs that are not covered by the regular health policies (in most cases) apart from providing benefits that are akin to life insurance, to either the insured or his representatives. They only cover accident related risks; natural and predictable causes are exempted.

A typical accident health insurance policy provides emergency costs, disability benefits and death benefits. This is not dissimilar to a life insurance cover but limited to accidents. An accident can be deemed as an unexpected and unpredicted event that causes bodily injuries to people. (For example – it can be an injury resulting from an auto accident or from a fall down the stairs).

The insured is covered for is potential loss of income during the time spent in recuperation. Any disability or dismemberment that is caused by accidents is also covered. Partial or complete benefits can be provided to the insured based on the plan. This provision is generally not available in the regular health or life cover plans and is the most attractive feature of these plans. The insured can utilize the benefits for living expenses and costs during the time of recuperation, without worrying about loss of income due to non continuance of work. Death benefits are also a provision in these plans and work in exactly the same way as the regular life insurance plans.

Accident health insurance plans are extremely low priced and provide almost as much benefits as a life insurance policy, albeit for accidents. Any person is eligible to get a policy. People who cannot afford the high costs of life and health insurance or are ineligible for regular insurances can partially secure themselves by availing these policies.

An accident health insurance can be taken as a stand alone policy but because of its very low price, it normally is taken as a rider or as a supplement to the regular health or life insurance policy. It provides benefits that are over and above the regular policy benefits and help the insured to increase the benefits at a very low cost. Even employers offer accident plans as a part of their insurance benefits to their employees. Accident health insurance plans are least restrictive of all insurance plans and give an equal opportunity to all to avail the benefits. Many companies offer accident plans and it normally takes just a couple of days for the policy to be issued. It is one of the most popular types of insurance that is available in the market and can also be fit as a supplement to almost all insurance plans.
